A thought piece by Tom Mc Brearty
Why Belong? A town full of promise in our community.
Most of us who live, work and play in or near Rangiora have probably noticed the quiet sea change of activity in the town. We offer the customer, the client and the recreational diner the choice, opportunity and hopefully service that impresses. However did you realise that in one building alone in Rangiora there are 16 new professionals operating, bringing people (their clients/customers) from Christchurch to Kaikoura into Rangiora and they all shop, eat and relax while they’re here.
The mix of retail, hospitality and services has seen the return of traditional traders, the arrival of new ones and dare we say it increased competition for the residential dollar. Sometimes that increased presence and choice creates uncertainty and nervousness. Will the new arrivals effect my business, what do I do to ensure my presence in the town offers me a reasonable return for my outlet, what should I do? Can I survive and thrive?
The obvious answer for some is to increase the advertising budget, targeting the customer you know. The investment however is targeted to your outlet and your place as a destination. There is nothing wrong with that. However it is a focused approach based on what you have to offer. People love choice and they love service.
There is an alternative, a supplement to your existing advertising. It is cost effective and collective in its approach to increasing customer interest and town activity. It also gives you, the local business an opportunity to be involved in increasing the business activity and interest in the town. And it has a social arm where you can mix, mingle and share your thoughts with other business operators who have invested in the Town.
By investing in them you will and can make a difference to your bottom line and reap the benefits of the increased trade through increased presence of people in the town.
It is called Rangiora Promotions.
Before you go “yeah right” this a promotions organisation that is focused on delivering people to your town and getting them to linger longer. At their recent AGM they outlined their focus, their commitment and their targets for increasing interest and activity in the town. Rangiora Promotions has a focus on improving your business activity by bringing people to your door. The rest is up to you.
By collectively marketing and promoting the town, Rangiora Promotions adds value to your own advertising and they drive numbers beyond your individual audience and traditional customer. They drive awareness of the Town and what it has to offer.
This is a revitalised group of people who are driven to delivering events, increasing the Town profile, giving you a “Voice” not just in terms of customers but also a profile voice throughout the region and also where necessary a voice at the Council table. They support the town, the business operators, promote events and advocate for a variety of crowd pulling operations from music to motoring to Winter Festivals.
If you are not already a member consider becoming one, sooner rather than later-there is competition out there, they are not here and they don’t care-it’s online!
People like events and the chance to wander in and out of shops, cafes and combine that with time at the park, a dance in the street or saunter down the road while looking at the cars during Muscle Car Madness, or participating in an ethnics food night, a Christmas Parade or just having a lazy Sunday afternoon.
When that happens people come off line, drive, arrive and thrive on the offerings in the town.
Why belong? Your commitment (as a member and supporter) makes the difference and when you combine that difference with participation and service we all benefit and so does our community. Your investment gives you the opportunity to enjoy and participate and gives Rangiora Promotions the dollars to deliver.
That commitment to membership (honestly a very small investment) also requires a commitment to be open however that’s another story for another day.
Why Belong? Why not? It your Town and the Town is your future.

Community Support and Promotion
'Dear Ross, I attended last night’s meeting of the Rangiora Promotions Association and enjoyed the forward thinking, proactive attitude as well as the acknowledgement of the associations work in the town.
On a personal note your leadership and energy has added huge value. When Yvonne and I first shifted in to North Canterbury the association was not highly regarded nor was it supported. You, your committee and staff has made the difference'.

'Dear Rangiora Promotions Chairperson, Ross Ditmer.
Carol and I would like to say thank you very much to Belinda Topp and Rangiora Promotions for all of your incredible support in helping to make our Outdoor Community Cinema Night such a huge success.
Belinda was a wealth of knowledge in guiding us through all aspects of organising and coordinating an event. She was such an asset in helping us to optimise our marketing/promotion through Rangiora Promotions Facebook page and also with creating posters and handouts.
With Belinda's encouragement we applied and received funding for the movie equipment costs. Belinda met with us three times to help with our pre planning then once after to give feedback and suggestions in case we organise a similar event again.
Belinda and Rangiora Promotions' support helped to make our event the perfect community family night out!
Thank you very much'

Last Wednesday Club
'I have been a member of Rangiora Promotions Association for two years and I always try to attend the Last Wednesday Club when I can. It is a great way to meet business owners in our local area and share experiences, challenges and to learn more about what they do. I was encouraged to join by a colleague and I’m very grateful for the introduction. Over the time I have been a member, I have gained a couple of clients which, as a bookkeeping and payroll business, we work with on a monthly basis. In addition, I have connected with businesses in similar industries and we have met to establish how we can work together for the benefit of our mutual clients. I have also used the services of members so I can support them with their own businesses. It is very beneficial being a member of the Rangiora Promotions Association'

'I went to the Last Wednesday Club in September which was held at Guthrie Bowron in Rangiora. I must say it was an eye opener as I didn't realise that they had so many interesting things in store. It was a very informative evening and I enjoyed meeting so many new business people. I own Chapters which is a secondhand and up-cycled shop in Rangiora. Since the event I have sent well over half a dozen people to Guthrie Bowron for items that I have been unable to supply. If I can't supply a customers request myself I always try to point them in the right direction to keep them shopping locally. I highly recommend going to these networking functions as it benefits us all in both expanding our businesses and keeping the consumers shopping in Rangiora which is a win win situation for us all'

'I have only been to two Last Wednesday club meetings so far and I have met some lovely ladies. It has been great putting faces to names of businesses I have seen advertised. I love going and it's a well run event. Looking forward to the one this month'
